Intro to Windows XP

Windows is the software operating system for your PC (personal computer).  Learn to use the mouse, to manipulate windows, use dialog boxes and menus, manoeuvre through multiple windows, create and move files and folders, type simple documents in WordPad, and manipulate pictures in Paint.

This course is subsidized by an Alberta Learning Rural Innovation and Access program grant.

Intro to Word

The basic skills to type letters using the program Microsoft Word will be taught. How to enter and edit information, save and retrieve files, using tabs, bullets and autocorrect will be covered. Learn to use spell check and format the document you produce. This is a hands-on class.

This course will introduce you to the use of the Internet. You will learn how to get connected, use e-mail and the basics of surfing the World Wide Web. The instructor will demonstrate how to use search tools to find information on any kind of topic.

Learn to use this popular presentation program to build your own slide shows. Participants will see how easy it is to put words, pictures, sounds and movies on the screen and run a show.

Learn to use Microsoft Expression Web to make your own web site and publish it on the Internet. Participants will learn to create, edit and maintain a basic website.

Internet Safety Tips for Parents
Parents may wish to consider these tips to help prevent Internet communication between their child and a sexual predator: 

  • Get involved – learn about chat rooms and find out what your child is doing online.
  • Talk to your child about responsible Internet use.
  • Place the computer where you can see what your child is doing at all times.
  • Monitor your child’s Internet use.
  • Explain appropriate and inappropriate computer use.
  • Do not allow your child to meet anyone over the computer or personally without your permission.
  • Encourage your child to tell you if anybody says or does something online that makes her or him feel uncomfortable or threatened.
  • Encourage your child to create his or her own Internet code of conduct.
  • Create an online contract for your child’s Internet use.
  • Report any incident of online harassment and physical threats to your local police and Internet service provider.
