Definitions

Some of the following terms might appear in the Council Resource Guide:

AAE - Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, a ministry of the Alberta government responsible for post-secondary, apprenticeship and community-based adult learning.

ARBP - Annual Report and Business Plan

CALC - Community Adult Learning Council: A community-based not-for-profit organization designated by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology to address part-time, non-credit learning needs in the local community

CALP - Community Adult Learning Program: a coordinated and comprehensive system of community-based education designed to fulfill the part-time, non-credit learning needs of adult Albertans 

CAP Site - Community Access Program Site; a site that is participating in an Industry Canada initiative to provide affordable public access to the internet.

CLN - Community Learning Network: A not-for-profit society that provides leadership, support, resources & assistance to CALCs 

CLNOnline - An online resource for CALC coordinators, which includes discussion forums, useful documents, contact information, and much more

Community Programs - A department of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology that manages the Community Adult Learning Program.

DHA - (Old term) Designated Hosting Authority - now called "Legal Host"

LA - Literacy Alberta: a not-for-profit society that supports people involved in literacy activities and influences public policy. Merger of the former AAAL (Alberta Association of Adult Literacy) and LCA (Literacy Coordinators of Alberta)

Legal Host - A legal entity that receives the CALP grant on behalf of a CALC that does not have society status.

RIA - Rural Innovation and Access Fund: Special funding available to councils providing learning opportunities to rural communities

RRL - Regional Resource Leader: An experienced CALC coordinator that organizes local training and mentors new coordinators in the region

RRN - Regional Resource Network: Part of the CLN, this network supports CALCs by offering support and professional development in seven regions throughout Alberta.

VTALP - Volunteer Tutor Adult Literacy Program: a program funded by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology to help learners improve their functional literacy skills through volunteer tutor-based instruction.
